Longwall mining

Longwall mining is a form of underground coal mining where a long wall of coal is mined in a single slice (typically 0.6–1.0 m (2 ft 0 in–3 ft 3 in) thick). The longwall panel (the block of coal that is being mined) is typically 3–4 km (1.9–2.5 mi) long and 250–400 m (820–1,310 ft) wide.

Longwall Mining — Center for Coalfield Justice

Longwall mining is a deep mining technique capable of fully extracting huge panels of coal, frequently up to 1,500 feet wide and two miles long. Coal shearing machines known as "continuous miners," remove a long wall of coal in a single slice as hydraulic jacks hold up the roof above and in front of the machine.

Analysis of geomechanical changes in hanging wall …

 · The method of sublevel coal extraction requires multi caving of the hanging wall layers, which are recompressed, and where each represent a hanging wall in sublevel stoping. Extensive stress and deformation changes in the surrounding area and in the mine represent a safety hazard for employees since the supporting system in the mine roadway could collapse. By accepting …

 · Longwall mines produce more than 30 pct of all underground coal, up from 5 pct just 15 years ago. The continued growth of longwall mining without appropriate multiple-seam planning may increase the cost and risk of mining. Optimization of the mine design

What is Longwall Mining? (with pictures)

Longwall mining is a highly productive underground coal mining technique. Longwall mining machines consist of multiple coal shearers mounted on a series of self-advancing hydraulic ceiling supports. The entire process is mechanized. Longwall mining machines are about 800 feet (240 meters) in width and 5 to 10 feet (1.5 to 3 meters) tall.

Longwall and caving mining methods | SpringerLink

Longwall and caving methods are distinguished from other mining methods by the fact that the near-field rock undergoes large displacements so that mined voids become self-filling. In caving methods, the far-field rock may also undergo large displacements. In increasing order of magnitude of country rock displacement, and in decreasing order of ...
